Join the National Catholic Broadcasting Council for The Promises of Advent—a four-week online retreat of Scripture, reflection, and song. Beginning on Saturday, November 30, and continuing through Christmas Day, each week reveals a new dimension of God’s faithfulness through his promises made, spoken, prayed, and magnified in love. Journey with us as we prepare our hearts to welcome Christ, the Light of the World.

Hymns of Advent

Each Sunday of Advent, join Dr. Christina Labriola as she offers a reflection on one of the great hymns of the season, followed by a performance by the Daily TV Mass Choir. These beloved hymns express the themes of hope, peace, joy, and love that guide us toward Christmas:

Week 1: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel – the cry of hope
Week 2: Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming – the song of peace
Week 3: Creator of the Stars of Night – the hymn of joy
Week 4: My Soul Magnifies the Lord – Mary’s song of love

Week 1: The Promise is Made — Stories from the Old Testament

Dates: November 30 – December 7
Leader: Fr. Ernie De Ciccio
Hymn of the Week: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel – the cry of hope

Our Advent journey begins with the promise made in creation and the goodness of God’s plan. Through the stories of the Old Testament, we are reminded that we are created in God’s image and called to live in hope and trust in his covenant love.

Week 2: The Promise is Spoken — The Prophet Isaiah

Dates: December 8 – December 14
Leader: Fr. Michael Coutts, S.J.
Hymn of the Week: Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming – the song of peace

The words of the prophet Isaiah echo across the centuries, proclaiming God’s promise of a Messiah who will bring light to those in darkness. This week invites us to listen with faith to God’s Word and to trust that his promises are still being fulfilled in our lives today.

Week 3: The Promise is Prayed — The Psalms

Dates: December 15 – December 21
Leader: Cardinal Thomas Collins
Hymn of the Week: Creator of the Stars of Night – the hymn of joy

This week, we turn to the Psalms, the ancient prayers of God’s people. In their joy and sorrow, lament and praise, we find our own voice of hope and faith. Prayer draws us into relationship with God, who hears our cries and renews our hearts with peace.

Week 4: The Promise is Magnified — Mary’s Song

Dates: December 22 – December 24
Leader: Fr. Peter Turrone
Hymn of the Week: My Soul Magnifies the Lord – Mary’s song of love

As Advent draws to a close, we join Mary in her Magnificat—a song of joy and thanksgiving. Her faith magnifies the Lord’s promise and shows us how to receive Christ with humility and love. In her example, we see the fulfilment of every divine promise.

Christmas Day: The Promise Fulfilled — Our Saviour is Born

On Christmas Day (December 25), we conclude The Promises of Advent with a final series of short reflections from each of our retreat leaders, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ—God’s promise fulfilled. Together, they invite us to rejoice in the gift of our Saviour and the hope of everlasting life.
