The Creation of the Breaking of the Bread ICON

The gift of the Daily TV Mass is about to turn 20! We were looking for an image that captured the purpose of the ministry of the National Catholic Broadcasting Council (NCBC).  The story of the disciples on the Road to Emmaus in Luke’s gospel encompasses this Mission.

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” Luke 24

Pope Francis in the beginning days of his papacy said:

“The thing the church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs nearness, proximity.

These two insights help us to develop our Vision which is “Warming Faithful Hearts”.

We met with Mrs. Ria Kinghorn, a noted iconographer, and talked about the creating an image we could use as part of our ministry. After looking at several options we decided on an image that shows the disciples at the table, Jesus breaks the bread and it is in the ‘breaking of the bread’ that they recognize him. This image captures what happens at each and every Mass that is celebrated.

The icon which we have called The Breaking of the Bread took six-months and hundreds of hours to create and the video below shows the ICON as it goes from an idea into a beautiful image that we hope Warms Faithful Hearts. Many thanks to Ria for her hard work and dedication on this new image which will be with us for years to come.
